I Wrote this letter on the eve of my 20 year daughter leaving home for the first time to live in Madrid.
For me, it's the rawest open-hearted emotion I've ever put to paper.
I had second thoughts about putting this out there as It is so personal but I feel a lot of parents will identify. Just replace Leah with your own child's name.
lyrics
Dear Leah,
Well I hope you get this letter
Hide it way down at the bottom of your case
In the arm of your winter sweater
I reckon you’d find it when the weather gets cold
But that could be a while yet, so I’ve been told
Dear Leah
Well It’s got to be your leaving
That’s unlocking all the parts of my paternal heart
And really showing me what I’m feeling
If you could see yourself through my eyes
Maybe then you’d realise what I’m seeing
Little by little I watched you grow.. In to this
beautiful woman that I know
All the stars I painted on your bedroom Door
Their light has faded now and they don't glow no more.
You and I belong Together
Daddy's and Daughter's that's forever
Swore to be your great protector
Not let anything bad affect you
Made that promise when you arrived
but tomorrow morning we gotta say goodbye
Dear Leah
Your getting ready in your room upstairs
Am I prepared for tomorrow night knowing you will not be there
And the faded linger of your perfume
Still hanging there in your lonely room
Dear Leah,
That I’ll miss you that’s a given
We'll be fine given time
But it’s your time to really start living
And what I wish above it all
Is that your dreams stay big and your worries stay so small
Little by little I’ve watched you grow
Maybe tomorrow I have to let you go
Dear Leah I hope you find this letter
